Trip Overview

The Marangu Route, popularly known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” is the only route on Mount Kilimanjaro that offers comfortable hut accommodation throughout the trek. It is one of the oldest and most established routes on the mountain, providing a well-defined trail and relatively gradual ascent. This 5-day adventure takes you through diverse ecological zones, starting from lush rainforest, moving through alpine moorland, and crossing the dramatic alpine desert known as the “saddle” before reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. The route is ideal for trekkers seeking a direct, structured, and less physically demanding camping experience compared to other routes.

Day 1: Marangu Gate (1,870m) – Mandara Hut (2,700m)

After registration at Marangu Gate, begin your trek through the lush tropical rainforest that surrounds the lower slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. This forest is rich in biodiversity, including colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and a variety of bird species. The trail is well-maintained and gently ascends through dense vegetation, offering a refreshing start to the climb. Arrive at Mandara Hut, located within the forest zone, where you will enjoy dinner and your first overnight stay on the mountain in comfortable hut accommodation.

Walking Time: 4–5 hours

Day 2: Mandara Hut (2,700m) – Horombo Hut (3,720m)

Leave the rainforest behind and enter the heath and moorland zone, where the landscape becomes more open and expansive. Giant lobelias and senecio plants dominate the scenery, creating a unique alpine environment. As you ascend, enjoy spectacular views of Mawenzi Peak and the surrounding volcanic terrain. Arrive at Horombo Hut, a large and well-equipped campsite offering excellent views and a good opportunity for acclimatization.

Walking Time: 5–6 hours

Day 3: Horombo Hut (3,720m) – Kibo Hut (4,700m)

Continue trekking across the vast alpine desert known as “The Saddle,” a wide and barren stretch of land between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The landscape becomes increasingly harsh and lunar-like, with minimal vegetation and dramatic volcanic scenery. Arrive at Kibo Hut, the final base before the summit attempt, where you will rest early, hydrate, and prepare all equipment for the midnight ascent to Uhuru Peak.

Walking Time: 5–6 hours

Day 4: Kibo Hut – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Horombo Hut (3,720m)

Begin your summit attempt shortly after midnight under cold and challenging conditions. The steep ascent leads to Gilman’s Point on the crater rim, followed by Stella Point, and finally Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Reaching the summit at sunrise is a life-changing experience, with breathtaking views over glaciers, volcanic craters, and the African continent below. After celebrating your achievement and taking photographs, descend carefully back to Kibo Hut for a short rest, then continue down to Horombo Hut for overnight recovery.

Walking Time: 10–14 hours

Day 5: Horombo Hut (3,720m) – Marangu Gate (1,870m)

After breakfast, begin your final descent through the moorland and rainforest zones. The trail offers a relaxing walk back through familiar landscapes, giving you time to reflect on your summit achievement. Upon arrival at Marangu Gate, receive your official summit certificate as recognition of your accomplishment. After completing park formalities, transfer back to your hotel for rest and celebration.

Walking Time: 5–7 hours

Best Time to Climb
