Tour Highlights
The Northern Circuit Route is the longest and one of the most scenic routes on Mount Kilimanjaro. Renowned for its excellent acclimatization profile and high summit success rate, this route circles the quieter northern slopes of the mountain, offering breathtaking views, fewer crowds, and diverse landscapes. Unlike the more popular routes, the Northern Circuit provides a remote wilderness experience, allowing trekkers to enjoy the mountain’s beauty in relative solitude. Throughout the journey, hikers pass through lush rainforests, expansive moorlands, alpine deserts, and rugged high-altitude terrain before reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa and the ultimate goal of every Kilimanjaro climber.
After registration at Londorossi Gate, transfer to the trailhead and begin trekking through the lush rainforest. The forest is home to a variety of bird species, colobus monkeys, and unique vegetation, making the first day both scenic and exciting. The trail gradually ascends beneath a canopy of towering trees before reaching Mti Mkubwa Camp, also known as the Big Tree Camp, where you will enjoy dinner and your first overnight stay on the mountain.
Walking Time: 3–4 hours
Leave the rainforest behind and ascend into the heath and moorland zone. As the vegetation changes, spectacular views of the Shira Ridge and distant mountain peaks begin to emerge. The trail becomes more open, providing excellent opportunities for photography and appreciation of Kilimanjaro’s diverse ecosystems. Arrive at Shira 1 Camp and enjoy stunning sunset views over the Shira Plateau.
Walking Time: 5–6 hours
Today’s trek crosses the scenic Shira Plateau, one of the highest plateaus in the world. The relatively gentle hike allows for gradual acclimatization while offering magnificent views of Kibo Peak and the surrounding volcanic landscape. The plateau’s vast open spaces and unique vegetation create an unforgettable trekking experience. Arrive at Shira 2 Camp in the afternoon with ample time to rest and acclimatize.
Walking Time: 3–5 hours
This is an important acclimatization day as you ascend to Lava Tower, a striking volcanic rock formation standing at approximately 4,630 meters above sea level. After spending time at this higher elevation, descend slightly to Moir Hut following the highly effective “climb high, sleep low” principle. This strategy significantly improves your body’s adaptation to altitude and increases your chances of a successful summit. The dramatic scenery and changing landscapes make this one of the most rewarding days of the trek.
Walking Time: 6–7 hours
Travel across the remote northern slopes of Kilimanjaro, where the trails are quieter and the sense of wilderness is at its peak. Enjoy stunning panoramic views across the Kenyan plains and the northern side of the mountain. The route traverses rolling terrain with unique alpine scenery rarely seen by climbers on other routes. Arrive at Buffalo Camp and enjoy a peaceful evening beneath the mountain skies.
Walking Time: 5–7 hours
Continue traversing the northern circuit while enjoying unique perspectives of Kilimanjaro and the vast landscapes stretching toward Kenya. This section of the route is known for its tranquility and spectacular viewpoints. The gradual ascent further supports acclimatization, helping prepare your body for the upcoming summit attempt. Overnight at Third Cave Camp.
Walking Time: 4–6 hours
Ascend gradually to School Hut, the final base camp before the summit attempt. The landscape becomes increasingly rugged and barren as you move into the alpine desert zone. Upon arrival, enjoy an early dinner and spend the remainder of the day resting, hydrating, and preparing equipment for the midnight summit climb. Adequate rest is essential for the challenging ascent ahead.
Walking Time: 4–5 hours
Begin your summit push shortly after midnight under a blanket of stars. The challenging ascent takes you to Gilman’s Point and Stella Point before finally reaching Uhuru Peak, the Roof of Africa. Standing at 5,895 meters, the summit offers unforgettable sunrise views over glaciers, volcanic landscapes, and the African plains below. After celebrating this remarkable achievement and taking photographs, begin the descent through Barafu Camp and continue down to Mweka Camp for a well-deserved dinner and overnight rest.
Walking Time: 12–15 hours
Descend through the lush rainforest to Mweka Gate. The trail offers one final opportunity to enjoy Kilimanjaro’s rich vegetation and wildlife. Upon arrival at the gate, receive your summit certificate as recognition of your achievement. After completing park formalities, transfer back to your hotel for relaxation and celebration of your successful climb.
Walking Time: 3–5 hours
